Gathering in the Park -
Celebrating 50 years of Community
Date: July 18, 2009
Venue: Kennedy Community Center
Expected attendance: 1000 - 2500
This “only in Union City” event will celebrate the many cultures that have contributed - and continue to contribute - to our development and growth. Our robust community with its welcoming attitude is one of the most diverse cities in the nation, and our Gathering in the Park will offer opportunities to appreciate the best in each other.
We come from many different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We are home to people from babies to seniors. We live with disabilities, or we help those who do. We belong to young families, blended families, alternative families and extended families. Basically, we are all family – and our differences form strong bonds that unite us as friends.
The culmination of the event will be the unveiling of Union City’s Community Mosaic Mural, a public art installation that will include contributions from hundreds of people. This significant piece of art will be designed by a well-known local artist, and our committee will oversee the installation and the participation of the local citizenry. This project will have lots of help from the Human Relations Commission, the Public Art Review Board, and many, many others.
A wide variety of foods and beverages from around the world will be available. To round out the day, we’ll have a continuous program of music, dance, and spoken word performances
