Reenactment of the Official Incorporation of the City of Union City

Time: 7:00 PM
Place:
Site of the first City Council Meeting in 1959 - Cesar Chavez /Barnard-White Middle School (formerly Barnard Junior High School)
Admission is free.

At 2:00 in the afternoon on January 26, 1959, Union City’s founding fathers called to order its first meeting of a brand new City Council. The Council’s first action was to officially incorporate Union City as an independent City of the State of California, with all rights and responsibilities that accompany that designation.

This landmark action laid the groundwork for the next 50 years of growth, development, and beautification of the City that is now home to one of the most diverse communities in the nation and a population of over 70,000 people.

The critical event in Union City’s history will be remembered at a an official, ceremonial City Council meeting, not at today’s modern City Hall, but upon the same borrowed premises used for that historic first meeting. With the City’s current elected officials on the dais in place of the City’s founders, we'll ensure that it will be recorded as a new moment in history.

To add excitement and surprise to the event, we will open the time capsule that was buried on Union City's 25th Anniversary and see what's inside. To make sure those celebrating our next milestone birthday remember our generation, we'll be burying a new time capsule of our own to be opened in the future.

Guests and speakers may include past and present residents, mayors, council members, administrators, and many others who played key roles in developing of City of Union City.

To volunteer for this committee, contact Chair Tony Acosta at 510-675-5394.
