Lunar New Year Celebration
Date: February 8, 2009
Venue: Union City Sports Center
Expected Attendance: 500 - 1000
Bring in the Year of the Ox at Union City’s first major family-friendly celebration of the Lunar New Year!
The event will honor the traditional customs practiced by people of many different Asian ancestries who live in Union City. The Celebration will provide all of the food, activities, and fellowship that are sure to bring good luck and prosperity to last throughout Union City’s 50th Anniversary year.
The highlight of the day will be our own mini New Year’s parade, featuring the popular Lion and Dragon Dances, and showcasing all of the color and exciting pageantry of a traditional celebration marking the end of the Lunar New Year holidays.
Children and adults alike will decorate their own commemorative paper lanterns, and will have a chance to learn Asian calligraphy techniques. There will be martial arts demonstrations, and Asian cooking lessons. Live traditional music and dance will be performed by world-class professional entertainers and local organizations.
Food will be presented by the many local Asian restaurants in Union City, and there will be games and fun throughout the day.
The Lunar New Year event will also offer an opportunity to meet very special friends who will visit from Union City’s “Sister Center,” the Hangzhou Youth and Cultural Activity Center. These honored guests will come all the way from China to participate in Union City’s celebration and bring good fortune for the next 50 years.
